Things to Do near Our New Hampshire Inn & Mount Monadnock

“Monadnock was visible, like a sapphire cloud against the sky.”
—Nathaniel Hawthorne, Passages from the American Note-Books Aug 31st, 1838

Grand Mount Monadnock inspired Hawthorne as well as eminent writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain and Willa Cather and painters including Abbott Thayer, George de Forest Brush and Frank W. Benson.

Home to the renowned MacDowell Colony where artists from all disciplines come to create, Peterborough is a unique blend of the historic, cultural and recreational.

Peterborough is located within sight of Mount Monadnock with its network of trails to the southwest and Pack Monadnock, home to the Audubon Raptor Observatory to the east. The Nubanusit River joins the Contoocook Rivers in downtown Peterborough, where you will find great dining amongst unique shops and galleries.

Outdoor opportunities range from hiking, biking, and kayaking from spring to fall and downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing in the winter.

Peterborough and the Monadnock region host signature events throughout the year, including the Children and the Arts Festival, Thing in the Spring Music Festival, Farmers’ Markets, March Maple Weekends, and Midnight Madness skiing.
